Having Edit Produced the pilot I moved on as Lead / Senior Edit Producer to shape the 1st Episode. Taking on board lessons learnt in between the pilot and main filming and working the format into a fresh, bright new series that would stand out from other competitive cookery formats.

 

The first episode tested all the possible variations in tone, style and pace for each of the three rounds as well as the reality filming and use of the judges and host. Following numerous viewing with commissioning execs and the in house senior team, this set the format for the other edit producing teams to follow. I then moved on to edit produce the quarter finals.

Drawing from my BBC training and personal broadcast experience as a Senior / Series Producer I devised and taught a comprehensive producer foundation training course to suit mixed ability students wishing to learn more about the Producer role with additional focus on the guidelines and working practices involved in Children’s Television Production.

 

Each course blended theoretical and situational learning covering a broad range of topics including Team Roles & Responsibilities; Key Producer Skills, Qualities and Competencies; Anatomy of a TV Programme; Designing a Production Process; Format / Idea Generation and Development; Leadership Styles and Skills, Setting Objectives, Giving Feedback and Managing Poor Performance; Working With Children – Guidelines, Policies and Safeguarding Trust; Leading and Developing a Creative Team;  TV Production from Initial Pitch to Final Delivery.

 

As well as classroom learning the students were set online coursework designed around a real world location based production devised to utilise their learning in order to complete key production documents including Shooting Scripts, Timed Running Orders, detailed Recording Schedules and Risk Assessments.

Multi-Camera Studio Director and Course Tutor working part-time with the Department of Media & Communications, Goldsmiths, University of London teaching their 'Television Journalism' MA students the practical skills and techniques of a live news studio production team as well as instructing them in additional roles including gallery technical operation, studio camera, floor / stage management and on-screen presenting.

 

I was responsible for assisting the senior lecturers in developing the students editorial and directing skills and leading the student production teams in the delivery of their weekly ‘as-live’ news studio exercise, sharing with them the comprehensive training and professional experience I gained as a studio producer and multi-camera studio director while working for the BBC.

'The Flying Saucer / Al Tabaq Al Ta'er' was a new ‘healthy eating’ factual entertainment series blending sci-fi, cookery, comedy and drama, created to educate and entertain the audience and help to combat the growing obesity problem amongst children in the Middle East. Scripted in English and shot in Classical Arabic, the series was filmed both on location and in studios based in Doha, Qatar.

 

I was responsible for directing and mentoring inexperienced cast / contributors and adapting scenes to fit their abilities, creating daily recording schedules to maximise the use of studio and child contributor availability, supervising the production team, food stylist, design team, Arabic studio producer, multi-camera director and on-screen talent during rehearsals and recording to ensure that the script translations worked in a foreign language and that all the key science / factual content was delivered on screen.

 

Following filming I took on the role of Series Edit Producer, managing multiple edit suites and reviewing all edits from rough cut to fine cut, overseeing on-line, dub and picture grading and signing off all episodes for final delivery.

An exceptionally fast turnaround production, the documentary was commissioned as a spin off from ‘Live & Kicking’ and focussed on the group as they looked back at the highs / lows of their career and their feelings about their most successful year to date.

 

Following filming I edit produced the 30min documentary ready for its broadcast on New Years Day 1999. The programme was watched by over 4 million viewers and was the largest audience that the ‘Live & Kicking’ brand had ever reached.
